WHEN THINKING ABOUT HABITS, LOOK AT THEM AS A TIMELINE.

YOU PROGRESS THROUGH 4 DIFFERENT STAGES

1. QUE/NOTICE – BECOME AWARE THAT SOMETHING NEEDS TO CHANGE E.G., A PLATE OF COOKIES ON THE KITCHEN TABLE

2. CRAVING/MOTIVATION – THE DESIRE FOR YOUR ACTION

3. RESPONSE – PICK ONE UP FOR A BITE

4. REWARD – EVEN A BAD HABIT CAN SERVE YOU E.G., THE YUMMY TASTE OF A COOKIE

IMMEDIATE OUTCOMES ARE OFTEN PAINFUL AND ANNOYING. FOR EXAMPLE, GOING TO THE GYM REQUIRES EFFORT AND ITS TIME CONSUMING AND UNCOMFORTABLE BUT THE LONG-TERM OUTCOME IS BENEFICIAL. YOU FEEL FITTER, YOU LOOK BETTER, YOU FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE IN YOUR BODY. THIS IS SIMILAR TO BAD HABITS. THE IMMEDIATE OUTCOME SERVES YOU AND IT FEELS GREAT! THE TASTE OF THAT YUMMY COOKIE. BUT YOUR ULTIMATE OUTCOME IS BAD, MAYBE YOU’RE OVERWEIGHT OR UNHEALTHY.

THE CHALLENGE TO BUILD BETTER HABITS IS RECOGNISING IMMEDIATE AND ULTIMATE OUTCOMES. TRY LOCKING IN GOOD BEHAVIOURS THROUGH COMMITMENT AND COMMITMENTS DEVICES. WHEN WE THINK ABOUT OUR FUTURE SELVES, WE WANT WHAT’S BEST FOR US. BUT IN THE PRESENT MOMENT/MOMENT OF ACTION YOU’RE NO LONGER THINKING ABOUT YOUR FUTURE SELF YOU’RE THINKING ABOUT YOUR PRESENT SELF.

FOR EXAMPLE, YOU GO TO BED AND THINK YES! I WILL WAKE UP AND GO FOR A RUN BUT WHEN MORNING COMES, YOU’RE THINKING ABOUT YOUR PRESENT SELF AND THIS SELF WANTS CONVENIENCE AND TO BE COMFORTABLE. OUT OF THE TWO OUTCOMES LYING IN BED IS EASIER AND MORE CONVENIENT.

MY TIP IS TO USE A COMMITMENT DEVICE. A COMMITMENT DEVICE KEEPS THE PRESENT MOMENT/DECISION MORE PAINFUL. HERE IS AN EXAMPLE OF A COMMITMENT DEVICE. YOU PLAN THE NIGHT BEFORE THAT YOU WANT TO GO FOR A RUN IN THE MORNING. BUT MAYBE WHEN YOU WAKE UP THE CHANCE IF YOU ACTUALLY GOING IS SLIM. SO, THEREFORE, YOU CALL A FRIEND AND PLAN TO GO ON A RUN WITH THEM. THEN WHEN MORNING COMES, YOUR FRIEND IS WAITING OUTSIDE FOR YOU AND IF YOU DON’T SHOW UP, YOU’RE A BAD FRIEND. THIS HAS GIVEN YOU AN IMMEDIATE COST TO YOUR BEHAVIOUR. ADD SOME IMMEDIATE PAIN TO NOT ACTING. ADDING THIS IMMEDIATE PAIN TO NOT ACTING/ DOING THE BAD HABIT WILL MAKE YOU LESS LIKELY TO CONTINUE THE BAD HABIT.
